Soul Eater: Soul Art Encore! art book review

Date: 2026-1-26

Atsushi Ohkubo is a wonderful artists all around.
His sense of style has been prevalent since the start of Soul Eater
and continues in his, now finished, manga Fire Force.
On my birthday, happily, I would find the chance in Barnes
N Noble to get this at their manga section.
This art book would contain mainly his work on
Soul Eater and Soul Eater NOT!
In total of 228 pages of old and new art work
printed in beautiful clear resolution! SEEncore

Like I already said, this is an art book of all the art work, promotional, and even colored stylized manga panels from Soul Eater. You can see the development of his art style looking through the pages.
Going from this almost wonky anime style manga had to giving his characters more stylized but more nicer anatomy. The rendering would also get nicer touch as his style improved not to mention how much he experiments with other styles too.

The main issue was just the formatting for getting the bigger and nicer quality images going from portrait to landscape. It would be annoying turning the book around again and again but thats just a little nitpick from me. My favorite pages are the covers for the Soul Eater Perfect Editions manga. Comparing to his art style from the beginning of Soul Eater to now is just night and day.

While I love his new style, I have got to say his better art has to be around the end of Soul Eater. The coloring and rendering of the pieces he made is so beautiful. You can see he has downgraded to more simpler type of style but it isn't a bad thing as artists have different ways of wanting to draw their art. But you can't deny his style when Soul Eater was nearing his end was aestheically beautiful.

I don't have much to say but nerding out over this art book as Ohkubo has been a heavy inspiration to me to his terms of stylizing and I can't wait for more from him unless Fire Force is his last manga he would ever create. Even it is, then I wouldn't mind. He is an amazing artist.
